The modern East Riding of Yorkshire used to form part of northern Humberside. It takes it's name from the historic county of the same name from the time when Yorkshire was made up of three ridings (North, West and East). The county has borders with North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
The East Riding is predominantly rural and has a coastline along the North Sea. This coastline suffers from ongoing coastal erosion and a number of places have needed to upgrade their seas defences in an attempy to halt or at least slow the rate of erosion. East Riding towns include the seaside resort of Bridlington, a few miles south of Flamborough Head, and the inland port of Goole, some 70 kilometers up the River Ouse.
